Sell Your Friends, Again

By Amanda Steinberg Friday March 05, 2010
This post is about entrepreneurship, profiles

dw_phone Back in May 2009, when DailyWorth was just learning to crawl, we published a post called "Sell Your Friends"—inviting our readers to promote their friends to the DailyWorth community.

Good karma. Good business.

It was such a success, we want to do it again. Let's take a break from all this talk of inflation, mutual funds and taxes to support and promote the women in our lives.

Reflect on the women you're already supporting...

Appreciate one who is helping you...

Think about who around you—at work or at home—could use some financial guidance, a job lead, or an entrepreneurial boost...

Now let's take it public.

We'll start. Here are some banners of women and organizations who have really helped DailyWorth grow by promoting us on their blogs and in the media. Thanks, ladies.

Your Turn!
Tell us about a woman-owned business that you love, and why. Links encouraged.

The Hired Guns was founded by the amazing Allison Hemming. http://www.thehiredguns.com/

Despite hooking people up with work, they're not a headhunter—Alli prefers to think of them as a talent agency. She's gotten me some great jobs and has encouraged me to be more confident and driven. She's like a cheerleader for the creative class. I LOVE her and The Hired Guns.

Tamara Monosoff is a business phenom, author and the genius behind www.mominventors.com. She is also one of the kindest, most generous human beings I have ever met (and I have actually never even met her in person!). We were introduced by a mutual friend when I was writing my first book, and while she didn't know me from Adam, she generously offered me her time and wisdom. Over the following years, she has continued to check in regularly, frequently offering invaluable advice and always with enthusiastic support. Tamara has made a living helping other women achieve their dreams, and she truly relishes when others succeed. I am lucky to "know" her, and eternally grateful that our paths crossed. If you have a business or product idea or even the vaguest hint of one, check out her web site and you'll be inspired!

Patti Moran turned her passion for pets (and a lay-off)into an opportunity to spearhead a new industry--professional pet-sitting. She authored "Pet Sitting for Profit," and is the president of Pet Sitters International (www.petsit.com), the world's largest educational association for profesional pet sitters (and where I work). Her ingenuity and willingness to share her knowledge have helped so many women (and men) over the last couple of decades follow their dreams of becoming business owners and working with animals by opening pet-sitting services.

I really respect and admire Linda of à la mode - Not only does she have a thriving indie business (and gorgeous goods) but she's constantly going out of her way to reach out and help others in the handmade community. She's been an active participant in several local artist groups, she's a dedicated blogger who's very involved and supportive of fellow creative types. Currently she's working on a huge project to pull together social networking and business resources (like DailyWorth) for creative entrepreneurs. On top of all this, she's a good friend and a loving wife and mom. She rocks!

I met Nicki at a tradeshow and have been supporting her as I love her products. Her website is www.hellomoc.com. She is a mother of 6 year triplet girls and avid recycler so she created MOC to allow consumers the opportunity to save money and reduce paper waste. Very rarely in gift giving is an actual greeting card necessary so stop paying $4.00 for individual greeting cards.

Who loves horses?

My best friend KC took her lifelong dream of bringing her horses home, and she bought a small horse farm about 90 minutes outside of NYC in November. She lives for these horses, and has room for 2 more horses to board at her farm. She has expansive veterinary experience, and her passion is working with rescued Thoroughbreds off the race track.

Here's the website:
www.thundermoonfarm.com

She also has a brand new blog that she started the other day!
http://thundermoonfarm.blogspot.com/

If anyone has ever wanted to invest in a rescue horse, KC can help you choose one, retrain it, and sell it to a great home if you'd like to double or triple your investment over a few months.

I've been inspired by the woman run business Trashy Diva for a very long time. I had the pleasure of working for this company for a few years, and I tried to soak up as much knowledge as possible while I was there. I take inspiration from Candice & Robyn who started Trashy Diva over 10 years ago when they were both in their very early twenties. Considering I've been trying to build up my biz since I was about 21 myself, I love seeing how far they've come!

Credit report repair is a multi million dollar industry. Everyone wants to know how to fix their credit. The problem is that most of us don't understand our credit until it's too late! That is why credit education is vital. Credit reporting agencies, however, have kept the information a secret. While we still don't have the "magic formula" for creating a credit score, we do have enough information to make educated decisions. Let's face it, your financial success depends on what is contained in your credit file.

On this site you will find helpful information concerning your credit, from how to get your free credit report to-up-to date articles on what to do in today's current economic situation. It is our goal to keep you informed. So if you have any questions you would like answered, please feel free to post them!!

I just found your site today, loving it. Through a set of (un)fortunate circumstances, I found myself just two weeks ago, realizing I will be out of a job soon. With two small children to raise alone, I felt helpless and overwhelmed. I did the only thing I could, and took a leap of faith. I started a website, dedicated to organic living/children, and monetized it. It sure is a long shot, but I had to do something. I started a blog as well (http://www.livingsimply4them.blogsite.com). I don't know where all this will lead me, but it has always been a dream of mine to have my own business, make my own way, and be a source of pride to my kids, the way they are to me.

I live in Fells Point, a historical neighborhood in Baltimore, MD. On my early morning walk to work I stop into a little independent coffee shop and bakery called Latte Da. This shop is run by the kindest, friendliest, most down to earth women. Stopping in to say hi and pick up a cup of coffee is the perfect start to a day that might otherwise seem unending. The owner of this shop bakes her own pastries, and often has her toddler daughter in the shop with her. The shop always has a rotation of tasteful and vibrant local art on the walls. All the women work hard to make a successful, local business and it really shines. Thanks Latte Da!

Dr. Doreen Moreira is an amazing physician. She actually listens to what you are saying and works to make you healthier rather than just give you medicine for your problem. Also, she does this interesting test to see if your body needs any vitamins or minerals. I feel great and recommend her to all of my friends.

Ryan of Littleputbooks on Etsy is fantastic. Not only does her art have a delightful whimsy and joy to it, she herself offers fantastic classes that help other Etsy sellers learn how to brand themselves, create a beautiful shop, and use all the social networking tools available, all of which can be a bit overwhelming when you start. I took a class from her and within days had made my first sale to a stranger on Etsy and was included in a Treasury. All thanks to Ryan. I want to shout about her from the rooftops because she's not only a wonderful artist and a good business woman herself, but she teaches to help others do the same.

My friend Rebecca Penning started www.RebeccaPlants.com about a year ago. In addition to helping people with their gardens, she focuses a lot on getting families out of the house and back into the ourdoors together. As a matter of fact, she just spent 365 days in a row outside! She also does mini-shows to inspire families to get outside, enjoy nature, and hopefully help the childhood obesity epidemic in the process. After years in corporate America, she finally followed her passion and is making it work. Seriously, check out her website.

I'll mention myself too. I run a massage therapy business in Park City, UT (www.cloud10massage.com). I provide massage therapy to people and dogs. I also consult with homeowners in how to create the perfect in-home massage room at their own homes. I've been running my own business for about 12 years now.

I've really enjoyed Daily Worth since I discovered it. Thank you!

Pamela is an inspiration to me, both in business and personally. In business, her focus and attention to detail constantly amaze me. Not only does she have a great head for business she is one of the most creative people I know. She has an MBA and worked for Anderson Consulting for years. Before earning her MBA she earned an architecture degree from the University of Florida. These two paths of education were a foreshadowing of the perfect blend of skill sets for owning a film production company. Creativity with a head for business.

After years of building her career in the corporate world she decided it was time to take a chance. In a bold move showing confidence she left the security of the corporate world to pursue her dream of making movies. She started a production company in Atlanta called Shadowlight Pictures. Developing her first movie took 7 long years. Along the way Pamela used her business skills to build Shadowlight Pictures into a well-respected production company with a wide variety of work-for-hire clients. Always wanting to grow creatively Pamela is now directing as well as producing. She is also writing a screenplay. She is really great in all of these roles too.

Not forgetting what brought her to the film business she diligently continued the pursuit of making movies. Her first feature film, Good Intentions, comes out March 9th. Not only did she produce an independent movie, which is a HUGE undertaking. To make sure Good Intentions --http://www.GoodIntentionsMovie.com -- would be a success, she worked diligently to secure a great cast. Her first movie stars Luke Perry (Beverly Hills 90210), Elaine Hendrix (The Parent Trap), Jon Gries (Napoleon Dynamite), Jimmi Simpson (Date Night) and Grammy award winner, country music legend LeAnn Rimes in her feature film acting début.

After seeing Kathryn Bigelow accept the first Oscar for a woman as a director last night, I was inspired to think about Pamela’s future in film. I’m sure we will be seeing Pamela accept an Oscar in the future. I’m just not sure if it will be for writing, directing or producing, maybe for all three of the categories.

As if all this business accomplishments were not enough on a personal level, Pamela is a beautiful, brilliant, caring, giving person with a great sense of humor, not to mention - her nieces Sydney and Berkley’s favorite aunt.
