This post is about , earning

Here today, spent tomorrow. How can you hang on to more of those precious dollars you earn?

Income protection is on the way, with the publication of "Your Money: The Missing Manual," by J.D. Roth, founder of the award-winning blog, GetRichSlowly.org (and long an inspiration to us at DailyWorth).

More for your money
True, most personal finance books cover the same old ground, and "Your Money" has some been-there-read-that moments. ("Pay yourself first." Bet you never heard that one.)

But Roth belongs to the new generation of non-formulaic personal finance writers, and he can zip through five times the amount of information in half the space of most money books. He delivers the basics (saving, getting out of debt, boosting your credit) and a wealth of money issues in between. How to...
  • Set goals and stick to 'em (try 43things.com, joesgoals.com, Stickk.com).
  • Plan a fab staycation (splurge on a deluxe tour—but stay in your own, ahem, budget accommodations).
  • Get a better job (go on informational interviews; test drive the new position part-time).
  • Invest in a four-in-one index fund (FFNOX).
Bottom line
$21.99 is a small price to pay to keep more money in your pocket.

Well, I've had plenty of those in the past, but this last weekend we went to a 175-guest wedding in Chicago, and I feel like we actually did well. We spent about $515 for two people over three days - $100 for the wedding gift, $250 in cash for various drinks and food, and a few credit card charges (maybe about $100 or so ther), plus $30 for some party favors, and $35 for a no-frills haircut. We drove in with friends, stayed overnight with relatives, and didn't have to buy new clothes, because the bride requested the bridesmaids wear black cocktail dresses and the groomsmen wear black suits they already owned. To recoup? This week we cooked at home, and we didn't go anywhere for Memorial Day weekend. I've also been selling our old DVDs and books on Amazon lately, which gives a little splurge cushion against random weekend spending.

I'm glad to hear that this author is touting getting a better job as a good way to build assets. You can only cut (in order to save) so much. But at least in theory there's no limit to how much your income can grow! In reality (where most of us live) there probably is, but given how few women ever ask for raises, and how few of us moonlight like we could, this limit is higher than most of us may know.
