Globetrotting for Good

Yearning for a getaway, but craving something more compelling than sipping Mai Tais in Maui? A "volunteer vacation" could do you a world of good—while enabling you to do some good in the world. So-called voluntourism is a rapidly-growing segment of the travel industry, says Genevieve Brown, executive director of the International Volunteers Program Association.

Even if you only have a week or two to spend, there’s much you can do, from assisting at an orphanage in Ghana to teaching basic computer skills to women in South Africa. Do your research:

    • Invest wisely. There are key questions to ask yourself as well as the organization before you choose your trip. You’ll cover most of your own travel costs, plus related fees. Don’t hesitate to ask how your money will be allocated, and to speak to prior volunteers.

In some cases, you may be able to snag a tax deduction, but talk to a tax pro first if that’s a priority.

Break the mold. What kind of volunteer vacation appeals to you?
