Will Congress Protect Your Paycheck? Comments

Equal Pay Day

Tuesday afternoon (that’s tomorrow) the U.S. Senate will vote on the Paycheck Fairness Act, which allegedly will help to ease the income disparity between men and women.

Really?

First of all, how many women even knew this legislation was up for a vote? (Please take our poll.)

Second, the actual terms of the law are meant to prevent wage discrimination based on gender, like this woman’s story—and give women greater recourse to fight for equal pay.

But the bigger issues won’t be solved by this law: The terrible truth is that if you’re a woman in this country, expect to earn about a quarter less than your male counterparts—and if you’re African American or Latina you’ll earn even less.

Yes, passing the Paycheck Fairness Act might do some good. But who is going to police companies to end decades of unequal pay? It’s up to each woman, individually, to know her worth, and to lobby for the pay she deserves.

This isn’t some abstract Feminist Issue, people: When you hear that women retire with a third less in their accounts than men, that’s the result of decades being paid less and therefore saving less.

Take Our Poll!

Vote, schmote. What will it take to close the pay gap?
