When you’re an entrepreneur, the right banking partner can mean the difference between your business merely surviving—and thriving.
When your bank provides support and streamlined services, you can pour all your energy into creative pursuits. To get a taste of it, we talked to Leigh Nelson and Lindsay McCabe, founders of the New York–based design firm LMNOP.
DW: What prompted you to open your own design firm?
Lindsay: I still remember the conversation Leigh and I had four years ago about starting LMNOP. We were so driven by the prospect of creating awesome design that we could be proud of. When we made the commitment, we were both petrified—but we were ready for the challenge.
DW: Tell us about what you specialize in and what makes LMNOP different.
Leigh: We wear a lot of hats. Many of our clients are hotels and restaurants, but we do everything from wine packaging and event invitations to Web design and branding for jewelers and architects.
Lindsay: I think what makes us different is our humor. We respect and love beautiful design, but we understand that it should be fun and evoke emotion. We have fun with each other, and I think that’s reflected in our work.
Leigh: So many things are intangible these days, with everything being digital. My favorite part of a project is getting physical samples from the printer at the end. There is something so satisfying about just holding it your hand!
DW: What’s the biggest challenge of running your own business?
Leigh/Lindsay: As designers, crunching numbers is not our cup of tea. But you have to know what’s going on with your business.
DW: What’s your #1 lesson for new entrepreneurs?
Leigh: Trust your gut. You go into business for yourself because you believe in some capacity that you can do it better.
Lindsay: And hire a good accountant!
