Hanah

Hanah Snavely has style—of both the sartorial and linguistic varieties. No surprise given her resume: She is a senior editor at Old School, a media outlet that creates back-to-the-basics content with a modern twist. And she freelances as a fashion and lifestyle writer for a few names you may know: DailyCandy, StyleCaster, and Refinery29.

Hanah’s fashion-centric career demands an awareness of trends, and her lifestyle (she works from home and splits her time between New York City and Los Angeles) lets her play with different looks. Here, she shares how she works the latest and greatest styles into her day-to-day wardrobe.

What’s your daytime work style?
I work remotely, so to resist the temptation to never change out of pajamas, I make it a point to work out first thing (a long run, a sweaty vinyasa yoga session), which forces me to shower and get dressed before noon.

Living in New York, leaving the house in the morning usually means I’m out for good. I prepare for it all: I pack my work gear in a chic, utility-driven Clare Vivier carryall that pulls double duty as a purse, and try to be mindful that my outfit should transition easily from day to night. Recently, that means borrowed-from-the-boys, sportswear-inspired pieces, paired with femme, sculptural Kathryn Amberleigh wedges and a fitted varsity jacket.

How do you take your look from office to evening?
I’m five-three, so heels are my friends. A pair of towering heels with baggy boyfriend jeans or high-waist trousers transforms my look and puts a strut in my step. If I know I’ll be out late, I’ll cruise in flats for the day but pack chunky metallic heels or pointed-toe pumps (a good reason to go big or go home when it comes to purse size).

What’s your weekend style?
Weekends are my time to ditch the heels and tailoring and have fun. Short, playful, circle skirts have my number lately, as do loose fitting crop tees, flat moto boots, and fitted bombers. As for accessories, I’m always reaching for my round, vintage, tortoiseshell sunnies, and my new obsession: piled-on rings from Catbird in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

What’s your best piece of personal style advice?
Be thoughtful about where you spend your money. Try to invest in high-quality shoes, bags, and jewelry, which you’re much less likely to tire of over time. Be a bit less spendy on apparel. Muted, tailored basics sourced from various price points are easy to pull off with a great bag, killer shoes, and statement jewelry.
