Hello DailyWorth! My name is Molly, and I’m a Special Effects Makeup Artist—in the making. I’m two years out of college balancing my 9 to 5 job with lessons, practice, portfolio building, and networking.
I first got interested in makeup while watching a behind-the-scenes feature for my favorite science fiction show, “Doctor Who.” When they featured the makeup artists—the people who take actors and turn them into aliens and monsters – something clicked, and I realized, “Oh, that’s what I want to do!”
Makeup artists are hired production-to-production, which means that my Dream Job challenge isn’t to land one perfect job – it’s to build a portfolio, a network, and a reputation that will get me hired again and again. I haven’t landed that first on-set job yet, and I have a long way to go before I can start supporting myself from my makeup career.
In addition to reading Ramit Sethi’s coaching material, DailyWorth connected me with their founder, Amanda Steinberg, to talk about how to build a serious network for my new profession. Amanda emphasized networking with as many people as I can, and suggested I keep track of my connections using a spreadsheet. This would help me keep track of all the connections I made, and make sure I was always following up appropriately.
I tried implementing some of Amanda’s advice at a trade show recently, but found that networking was a lot more difficult than I expected. It was hard to get the quantity I had set as a goal! Fortunately, the people I did meet had lots of advice to share about breaking into this industry, and they suggested I return for another show in May, where the atmosphere is geared more toward networking.
Needless to say, I’m planning on attending—but until then, I’m going to focus on improving my skills and my portfolio, which will help me present myself as a serious makeup artist, and give me the confidence I need to talk to more people.
