Career Chic Council: Meet Kamal Preet

Kamal Preet

Kamal has her dream job: She’s a Trademark Attorney Advisor at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, responsible for examining applications for the trademark registration. (We’ll spare you the “trademark style” segue.) Kamal’s approach—to invest each year in a couple pieces you plan to wear for decades—sets the foundation for a sophisticated wardrobe, regardless of office dress code.

What’s your daytime work style?
Working for this agency is great because the dress code is very flexible. This gives me a lot of room to be creative and express my sense of style. I usually wear dresses or skirts to work—I'll wear fitted dresses that are sleeveless or full-sleeve, but I also mix in flowy chiffon dresses. I love stripes and floral prints. And lately I’ve taken a huge liking to solid black dresses. They’re timeless and classy and look great on everyone.

But I must admit, by Friday I’m so tired and lazy I tend to be more casual, with jeans and a blouse.

How do you take your look from office to evening?
This is something I take seriously because you never know what the day or night may bring. I try to buy clothes that I can dress up or dress down with minimal effort. If my clothing is otherwise casual, I will make sure I wear some kind of bold jewelry and pretty heels to dress it up—I love my monogram necklace from Max & Chloe, as well as my Cartier Tank Solo watch (which I switch up with a round Michael Kors watch).

What’s your weekend style?
My weekend style is a less dressy version of what I wear during the week. I tend to wear more flats, skinny jeans, and more of a chic bohemian look. But if I’m going out in the evening or have a special event during the day, I bring my A game.

What’s your best piece of personal style advice?
I think it’s important to build a closet filled with few good quality classic pieces that can last a long time. Once you’ve collected a few quality items, you can make them fit any trend thanks to accessories. I try to buy one or two “forever” items each year; my latest was a black Halston Heritage dress that I got for a huge steal on sale at Intermix. Now I’m saving for a Cartier Love ring. I’ve managed to create a collection I’m quite proud of and wouldn’t mind sharing with my daughter one day!

  1. The Peplum Dress
Peplum is back and here to stay. This dress is the epitome of classic and chic.
Michael Kors jersey peplum dress, $160, available at neimanmarcus.com.

  2. The Striped Shirt
Kamal loves stripes and florals. I’d pair this shirt with the floral pant below. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns as along as the colors are in the same family and complement each other.
    Black-and-white shirt, $98, available at anntaylor.com.

  3. The Floral-Print Pant
These floral pants are a bit of an investment, but they are timeless and you’ll have them for years to come. As Kamal puts it, these would be one of her “forever” pieces.
Suno shirred viscose pants, $295, available at tenover6.com.

  4. The Peasant Blouse
This modern interpretation of the peasant blouse is a perfect balance between retro and contemporary. It’s even suitable for the office when paired with a tailored pant or skirt. Add a bold necklace to complete the look.
Michael Kors peasant blouse, $79, available at nordstrom.com.

  5. The Floppy Hat
Because Kamal isn’t afraid to accessorize, this feather-adorned hat is the finishing touch on her boho chic look on the weekends.
Christys’ Hats floppy hat, $50, available at urbanoutfitters.com.

  6. The Wide-Leg Jean
Skinny jeans are a staple in almost everyone’s wardrobe these days, but don’t be afraid to branch out and try other denim silhouettes. These wide-leg jeans are flattering on almost every body type and depending on the length can be worn with both flats and heels.
    Current/Elliott jeans, $198, available at anthropologie.com.

  7. The Shades
I don’t believe in spending a ton of money on sunglasses, especially when you can find all of the latest styles at reasonable prices. These ’70s-inspired shades with the gradient lenses are the perfect accessory for Kamal’s laid-back bohemian style.
Mossimo tortoiseshell sunglasses, $17, available at target.com.

  8. The Tassel Necklace
I love this vintage-inspired piece. It’s so versatile and can be worn dressed up or down. Friends might actually mistake it for a family heirloom.
    Tassel necklace, $11, available forever21.com.
