Kamal Preet

Kamal has her dream job: She’s a Trademark Attorney Advisor at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, responsible for examining applications for the trademark registration. (We’ll spare you the “trademark style” segue.) Kamal’s approach—to invest each year in a couple pieces you plan to wear for decades—sets the foundation for a sophisticated wardrobe, regardless of office dress code.

What’s your daytime work style?
Working for this agency is great because the dress code is very flexible. This gives me a lot of room to be creative and express my sense of style. I usually wear dresses or skirts to work—I'll wear fitted dresses that are sleeveless or full-sleeve, but I also mix in flowy chiffon dresses. I love stripes and floral prints. And lately I’ve taken a huge liking to solid black dresses. They’re timeless and classy and look great on everyone.

But I must admit, by Friday I’m so tired and lazy I tend to be more casual, with jeans and a blouse.

How do you take your look from office to evening?
This is something I take seriously because you never know what the day or night may bring. I try to buy clothes that I can dress up or dress down with minimal effort. If my clothing is otherwise casual, I will make sure I wear some kind of bold jewelry and pretty heels to dress it up—I love my monogram necklace from Max & Chloe, as well as my Cartier Tank Solo watch (which I switch up with a round Michael Kors watch).

What’s your weekend style?
My weekend style is a less dressy version of what I wear during the week. I tend to wear more flats, skinny jeans, and more of a chic bohemian look. But if I’m going out in the evening or have a special event during the day, I bring my A game.

What’s your best piece of personal style advice?
I think it’s important to build a closet filled with few good quality classic pieces that can last a long time. Once you’ve collected a few quality items, you can make them fit any trend thanks to accessories. I try to buy one or two “forever” items each year; my latest was a black Halston Heritage dress that I got for a huge steal on sale at Intermix. Now I’m saving for a Cartier Love ring. I’ve managed to create a collection I’m quite proud of and wouldn’t mind sharing with my daughter one day!
