What makes a person powerful? Is it her money, fame, position, charisma, social status, or expertise? While some of these are strong characteristics,, a true powerful person has the ability to use not only her external resources, but also activate her internal gifts and talents. An influential person is, first and foremost, true to herself, and her strong internal make-up is reflected in her outside world of relationships, work, community, and environment.

Powerful people put their stakes in the ground on what they know to be real, and continue moving toward the greater good of self and others. The leadership in their own lives is inviting, and they can’t help but naturally empower others. Their intense presence is aligned with their own personal values, continual personal growth, and resulting external actions.

Do you feel powerful in your life? If not, why? Maybe you are not tapping into all of your greatest treasures, or  tapping into your full potential. Perhaps you are still living the “life scripts” someone else gave you, or you have forgotten the dreams and aspirations you once had.  Maybe you have given your power away to someone who emotionally or financially supports you, but does not truly listen, understand, or even know you. Or maybe you are constantly trying to please a boss or coworker.

No matter where you are in your life, I believe you can regain your power by taking steps to access that forgotten energy. After all, your personal power is not something you get from things or other people; it is something that already exists within yourself. You just have to remember where it is and then retrieve it.

7 Ways to Access Your Authentic Power

1. The Power of Self

Identify your own personal power by knowing yourself — your values, priorities, aspirations, and limitations. Claim your truth as opposed to letting others define you, and use that truth to make a positive impact on the world around you.

2. The Power of Passion

Know what makes you feel alive and regularly engage in those activities that help you feel connected to yourself and your community. Do something physical to help you access the energy of feeling good and strong. What do you care about and what makes you mad in the world? Let that guide you.

3. The Power of Clarity

Choose what you want and be fierce with it. Your reality is determined by aligning powerful thoughts, words, and actions to support a vision that has meaningful influence and purposeful impact. Also, know your boundaries and stick to them

4. The Power of Connection

Share your dreams and challenges with loyal advocates who will safely hold your ideas and visions as sacred. Find collaborators and encouragers who feed your soul: co-workers, a coach, a mentor, and supportive friends or family.

5. The Power of Risk

Take a chance on being brave and vulnerable by doing something scary. Risk being uncomfortable or unpopular for the sake of pursuing what you believe in. As Elizabeth Gilbert asks in her latest book Big Magic, “Do you have the courage to bring forth the treasures that are hidden within you? The universe buries strange jewels deep within us all, and then stands back to see if we can find them.” Are you willing to go on an internal treasure hunt?

6. The Power of Action

A great idea without action is simply an idea. You must make it real by being proactive, not reactive, and taking steps toward your end goal. Many of my clients want a complete plan or guarantee before they will get started, but I encourage them to just start somewhere. Make a phone call, set up a meeting, or reach out to people you don’t know. Not asking is an automatic no.

7. The Power of Trust

Rely on your intuition, your experiences, your faith, and your wisdom. Let go and trust in God, a higher power, or the universe. Know what you can control and what you must let go of. Never, ever go against yourself.

It is within your power to become as happy, content, and successful as you make up your mind to be. Accessing your personal power will create the self-confidence you need to take action and ensure your desires come to fruition. By unleashing your power within each of these areas, you can go from feeling powerless to being powerful each and every day.
